In order to have surgery:
- Patients that have used nicotine in the past year will need to have a negative nicotine test prior to scheduling surgery. (Nicotine by-products have generally cleared most patient’s system with 4 weeks.)
- A second negative nicotine test will be required at your pre op visit about 2 weeks prior to surgery.
Our goal is to provide you with the best care possible and outstanding outcomes with the lowest risk for complications.
We know that nicotine constricts the blood vessels for a period after use or exposure. This causes poor blood supply out to the skin resulting in post-operative complications.
Nicotine use or exposure can cause breakdown of the incisions and wounds that are difficult to heal. Patients that have implants may even lose their implant or develop capsular contracture due to poor healing.
Your health and safety are our highest priority. We will happily provide you with a Chantix prescription if needed to assist with this process, if desired. The Colorado Quit line is also an excellent resource #1-800-Quit Now.
Please keep in mind that this policy is only for your safety. We understand nicotine use can be extremely challenging. If you find that you have had nicotine exposure during this process, please contact us so that we can postpone your surgery. Please communicate with us immediately as late cancellations and rescheduling can cause difficulties with multiple parties.
