According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 1.8 million elective cosmetic surgeries were performed in the United States in 2016. That doesn’t include or medically necessary surgeries.
The Society has compiled a list of the most popular cosmetic surgeries. Each one can be done by Dr. Schutte at Front Range Plastic Surgery. But wherever you choose to have yours done, remember to always choose a board certified plastic surgeon with a history of success.
This article identifies the top five trends according to the Society, and provides some valuable advice from us about what to consider if you are planning to have one of these procedures in 2017.
Plastic Surgery Trend #1: Breast augmentation
Topping the list as the most popular trend is breast augmentation. This probably is not a surprise to anyone. Known technically as augmentation mammaplasty, this procedure may include the use of transferred fat or implants to increase breast size, and we think it is popular because the enhancement it provides is so significant.
The procedure has come a long way and very natural-looking results make it almost impossible to tell if someone has had an augmentation. It is not a cure-all though. Implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime and they are not recommended for women whose breasts are still developing.
There is one other thing we strongly recommend that you discuss with your doctor – your surgical anesthetic options. Breast augmentation used to require general anesthesia under all circumstances. Now, it can be performed using a local anesthetic and sedative. There are pros and cons for each approach. Be sure you understand them.
Plastic Surgery Trend #2: Liposuction
Plastic Surgery Trend #3: Nose reshaping
Plastic Surgery Trend #4: Eyelid Surgery
Plastic Surgery Trend #5: Facelifts
The ever popular rhytidectomy is still near the top of the list, and with today’s technology and procedural advances, results are more dramatic and longer-lasting than ever. The best candidates remain those with realistic expectations whose goal is to look more refreshed, to reduce the appearance of aging created by loose skin or jowls, or to simply reduce the appearance of wrinkles. With all of the advancements that have been made, a facelift is still a surgical procedure, performed under general anesthetic and should be taken seriously. If you come to us for a consultation, we’ll review all of your options, including some less invasive and non-invasive options that we can provide right here in the office on an outpatient basis.
