Keep in mind that the best candidates for these surgeries are women who have stable lifestyles and maintain a fairly consistent body weight. It is best, with either option, to wait until you are sure you are done having children. And, as you age, your body is still going to change. Implants and lifts are both subject to the effects of time. Nothing lasts forever.
Both of these surgeries require some preparation on your part. You may have to undergo a mammogram and will have to follow instructions regarding taking certain medications prior to surgery. They both are done under general anesthesia, so be sure that you fully understand and accept the risks it presents. In rare cases, a lift may be done with a local anesthesia and a sedative.
Lift
Typically women seek out this procedure, known as mastopexy, because they want a more youthful appearance. Time, breastfeeding, and other things take a toll. As the old saying goes, gravity is not your friend. Depending on the severity of drooping or sagging that is occurring, a lift may be the best option. But, augmentation may be the right course of action. That’s why it is important to let a qualified plastic surgeon help you make the decision. Don’t just decide on your own and tell your doctor which procedure you want until you’ve hear all of the facts from them directly.
Is severe sagging is making you self conscious? Or do you just want to improve shape but definitely don’t want to increase size? Do you have loose skin after pregnancy or significant weight loss? Or does your skin just lack enough elasticity to “snap back” as your body changes over time? Or maybe you just prefer to have your breasts sitting higher on your chest. These are all indications that you are probably a good candidate for a lift.
Keep in mind that after your surgery, the change of contour and position of your breasts may also cause them to appear larger or smaller. It is important to consider this if size is also a concern.
Talk to your doctor about skin removal and scarring. Each woman is different. Sometimes scarring is virtually undetectable. Other times, when a significant amount of skin must be removed, some scarring may be visible. Make sure you know what to expect.
Augmentation
While most women focus on increasing size, augmentation also provides some lift. That’s why it is important to carefully consider which option is best for you. Filling up a small amount of drooping or loose skin can give you the result you are looking for.
You’ve got a lot of decisions to make, in consultation with your doctor, if you choose to go this route. Depending on your age, genetic predispositions, body-shape and other factors, you’ll need to decide on a saline or silicone implant, where your implants will be placed, where and how incisions will be made, and the size of implant that is right for you.
If your breasts have gotten smaller with age, if they are different sizes, or if you don’t feel that they are proportional to the rest of your body, you may be a good candidate for this surgery.
After surgery your breasts will be larger, more firm, and will not sag. If that’s what you’re looking for, come in for a consultation to talk about it.
